Optimal risk management in defined benefit stochastic pension funds

چکیده
We consider a continuous time dynamic pension funding model in a defined benefit plan of an employment system. The benefits liabilities are random, given by a geometric Brownian process. Three different situations are studied regarding the investment decisions taken by the sponsoring employer: in the first, the fund is invested at a constant, risk-free rate of interest; in the second, the promoter invests in a portfolio with n risky assets and a risk-free security; finally, it is supposed that the rate of return is stochastic. Modelling the preferences of the manager such that the main objective is to minimize both the contribution rate risk and the solvency risk, we study cases where the optimal behavior leads to a spread method of funding. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. A Defined Benefit Pension Fund ALM Model through Multistage Stochastic Programming
We consider an asset-liability management (ALM) problem for a defined benefit pension fund (PF). The PF manager is assumed to follow a maximal fund valuation problem facing an extended set of risk factors: due to the longevity of the PF members, the inflation affecting salaries in real terms and future incomes, interest rates and market factors affecting jointly the PF liability and asset p...
متن کاملOptimal asset allocation for aggregated defined benefit pension funds with stochastic interest rates
In this paper we study the optimal management of an aggregated pension fund of defined benefit type, in the presence of a stochastic interest rate. We suppose that the sponsor can invest in a savings account, in a risky stock and in a bond with the aim of minimizing deviations of the unfunded actuarial liability from zero along a finite time horizon. We solve the problem by means of optimal sto...
متن کاملOptimal Investment Policies for Defined Benefit Pension Funds
This paper analyzes optimal investment policies for pension funds of a defined benefit (DB) type. The nature of a DB fund induces a natural modeling of preferences being of the mean-downside risk type. With compensation for inflation as an explicit goal of a pension fund, a natural reference point for the risk measure is the future (indexed) value of the liabilities. Results are presented for d...
متن کاملShould Corporate Pension Funds Invest in Risky Assets?
Whether defined-benefit corporate pension plans should invest in risky assets has always been subject to debate, and the risky pension asset allocation frequently causes concerns. In this study, we model corporate pension decisions in a setting where a firm balances its risk management concern with employees’ preference for systematic risk exposure. For a reasonable set of parameter values, the...

Corporate defined-benefit plans suffer from a number of serious weaknesses, including credit risk of the sponsor, ambiguous ownership of the surplus and back-loading of benefits. Also defined-contribution plans feature drawbacks. Individuals are not well equipped to make the complex financial decisions involved, transaction costs are substantial and various risks are not managed properly over t...
